What the Pentagon’s Reactivation of a Cold War Bunker Means for Investors
Did you hear the news?
NORAD, the U.S. military command that scans the skies for airborne threats, has announced that it’s moving its command center back into an old Cold War bunker in Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado.
Built in the 1960s, the enormous hollowed-out bunker was designed specifically to withstand a nuclear attack from the Soviets. It’s situated beneath 2,000 feet of raw granite. Inside, there are 15 interconnected buildings. All of which are 100% earthquake-proof.
It has its own power plant, heating and cooling system, and water supply through a network of natural springs.
For nearly 40 years, the bunker stood as the most hardened military complex on U.S. soil. But in 2006, with the Cold War officially a thing of the past (or so we thought), NORAD decided to cut costs and vacate the facility.
Its command unit was transferred to Peterson Air Force base in Colorado Springs. That’s where it has remained for the past decade.
There’s a lot to consider…
With another possible Russian standoff on the horizon and the “imminent threat” posed by ISIS, North Korea and Iran, NORAD has decided it isn’t taking any chances. It’s double-timing it back to the old Cold War bunker.
But those aren’t the primary reason for the move back to the mountain. And if our own military is taking emergency measures… right now, at this very minute… then it’s critical that you do the same.

You may have heard about what happened just before 1:00 a.m. on April 16, 2013…
A trio of masked gunmen slipped quietly past security cameras and into position, surrounding a remote electrical substation in upstate California.
First they severed six underground cables. Then they cut power to the site’s emergency phone system. Moments later, all hell broke loose.
Muzzle flashes lit up the night sky… bullets rained down on critical equipment… and within minutes, the entire site was in shambles.
Armed with military-grade assault rifles and using fingerprint-free bullet casings to avoid detection, the attack took less than 20 minutes… destroyed $15 million in equipment… and nearly caused a statewide blackout across California.
Luckily, operators were able to redirect the flow of electricity just seconds before losing control of the system.
But the act of sabotage was not taken lightly.
Jon Wellinghoff, former chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), called it, “The most significant incident of domestic terrorism involving the grid that has ever occurred.”
And it may be just the beginning…
The Wall Street Journal quoted a former official who says the attack was merely a “dress rehearsal for a larger event.”
And Rich Lordan, a senior executive for The Electric Power Research Institute, said the attack “appears to be preparation for an act of war.”
Worse still… these perpetrators were never caught.
Despite a $250,000 bounty on their heads, they’re still at large today, free to strike again without warning. The FBI believes hundreds of others could be planning coordinated attacks in the coming months.
Only this time, the endgame could be a full-scale takedown of our national power grid… a scenario that threatens the safety and finances of every American.
In fact, there are four specific ways this could happen. And each scenario could result in something the Department of Energy calls “Black Sky Days” – an event so terrifying, it makes the financial crisis look trivial by comparison.

Because the truth is, the recent attack in California was not an isolated event.
Sparked by the assault in California, FERC investigators began looking into the threat of another coordinated attack on more substations.
You may have seen the reports about the investigation in a Wall Street Journal article titled “U.S. Risks National Blackout From Small-Scale Attack.”
Frankly, what these investigators discovered is downright terrifying.
Currently, there are more than 55,000 substations like the one that was attacked in California.
According to the FERC (and this is their exact language): “Destroy nine interconnected substations… and the entire United States grid would be down for at least 18 months, probably longer.”
Think about the reality of that for a second…
If we lose power for a few days or even weeks, it would disrupt our lives and take a toll on the economy… but we’d ultimately recover.
But if our country loses power for even just a few months, it could trigger a nationwide crisis of unprecedented proportions.
- Stocks would tank. Crime would soar.
- Grocery stores would be picked clean. Gas stations would run dry. Hospitals would shut down.
- You’d have no access to the Internet. No cell service. No ATMs.
- Your credit cards would be worthless. Billions of dollars in electronic wealth would be wiped out.
- And worst of all, you’d have no way to contact your family or call for help.
It’s a frightening scenario… one for which most Americans are completely unprepared.
It’s possible you’re already aware of this threat. You know that something like this could happen… You just hope it doesn’t.
Or maybe you’ve read a few news stories but you’d rather not think about it.
I don’t blame you. After all, it is a scary subject. It’s a lot to digest. And on a day-to-day basis, it doesn’t really affect your life.
Whatever you believe, as an expert in our nation’s critical infrastructure, I can tell you with 100% certainty that the threat of a nationwide blackout is as real as it gets.
In fact, a 2014 report from the Department of Energy proves that our government is already preparing for a catastrophic event involving the U.S. power grid.
And according to my research, it could occur within the next 12 months.
Codenamed “Black Sky Days” and quoted as being “inevitable,” this event could soon…
- Knock out power to more than 300 million Americans
- Cause more than $20 trillion in damage
- And in a worst-case scenario, leave us stranded in the dark for 18 months or longer.
Former CIA Director James Woolsey says this event could literally “bring our civilization to a cold, dark halt.”
Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, says the threat is “imminent” and that we should “not assume that another 9/11 large-scale attack is years away.”
I’d like to be clear about one thing… My goal is NOT to scare you.
And I understand if you’re skeptical that something like this could happen in our great country. However, after spending more than 35 years in the energy industry, I can tell you that the extreme vulnerability of our grid system is shockingly real.
According to the intelligence report from the Department of Energy, there are four specific threats, known as “Major Outage Events” or “MOEs,” that could trigger a Black Sky Day crisis. And I’m going to walk you through each scenario, step by step.
In fact, according to Homeland Security, it’s statistically guaranteed that at least one of these MOEs will occur. That’s why I’d also like to show you how to get your hands on three fundamental items that you need to have in your home right now.
Together, these items cost less than a tank of gas. But during an extended power outage, they’ll become essential to your everyday survival. So it’s important you have them on hand.
I’m certain a lot of good people will be unprepared when an event like this hits. And that’s a shame when it’s so easy and cheap to protect your family.
I’ll also reveal a way for you to secure something I call “disaster insurance.” Don’t worry… this strategy has nothing to do with the actual insurance industry.
Instead, it focuses on protecting your money – even growing your money – no matter how bad things get.
And just to cover our bases, I’ll explain how you can score quick profits in a group of companies getting paid billions to solve this problem should our government act in time to prevent this catastrophe.
This group is at the forefront of a “grid-saving” technology that guarantees zero power disruption during a blackout. And demand for this solution is now surging.

But first, let me back up a bit and show you what happened during the last major blackout, why I’m so concerned today, and what I believe will happen in the next 12 months.
A Wake-Up Call From the History Books
In short, if this threat becomes a reality, I believe that America will face a societal collapse of unprecedented proportions. I’m talking about a complete breakdown of the American economy… and not a gradual one.
This event could come without warning. And it will show no mercy for the unprepared.
Just look at what happened during the infamous New York City blackout of 1977. Perhaps you recall it too?
Like today, tensions in America were at an all-time high. It was the height of the Cold War. The U.S. was on the verge of an economic downturn. And distrust in the government had skyrocketed on the heels of Nixon’s presidency.
Then, at precisely 8:37 p.m. on July 13, 1977, during a summer storm, a bolt of lightning struck a key electrical substation along the Hudson River.
The hit destroyed the site’s equipment in a matter of minutes. But unfortunately, the damage didn’t stop there. The substation’s failure created a cascading effect that soon brought down the city’s entire electric system.
And by 9:36 p.m. – just an hour later – New York City was pitch-black.
LaGuardia and Kennedy airports shut down entirely. Thousands of people were left stranded in subway tunnels. Countless others were trapped in elevators. And soon, gridlock settled in as traffic lights hung useless over intersections.
Now, as you can probably imagine, people panicked.
With no electricity – and no answers – millions of frustrated people poured into the streets.
Before long, the sounds of car alarms and broken glass could be heard from every corner. And within a few hours, the entire city had descended into anarchy.
“The looters were looting other looters, and the fists and the knives were coming out,” a neurologist from Queens recalled years later.
All told, over the next two days, a total of 1,616 stores were looted and damaged, 1,037 fires were reported, 35 blocks of Broadway were destroyed, 550 police officers were injured, 3,776 people were arrested (that statistic stands as the largest mass arrest in New York history) and 5,244 people were taken to the emergency room.
In the end, the total damage estimate topped $340 million.
This is what happened in just two days without electricity. And this was limited to a single U.S. city.
Just imagine the consequences of a nationwide blackout lasting even a month or more. We’re much more dependent on the grid now than we ever were in the 1970s.
As a result, we’ve become much more vulnerable.
We’re in Uncharted Territory
From Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) and Target (NYSE: TGT) right down to your local grocer and gas station… the entire economy runs on electricity. Without it, the system fails.
In fact, of the country’s 16 critical infrastructure sectors recognized by Homeland Security… Every single sector requires electricity to function.
So if the grid goes down – even for just a month – the economy will crumble. Period.
But if it goes down for a year, the result would be cataclysmic.
Picture yourself suddenly in a world without electricity. For most of us, work would be impossible. No computers, no cellphones, no email or Internet.
You couldn’t get paid either. How long has it been since anyone got paid in cash? Or with a real check?
Most people would panic as they realized they couldn’t get money from ATMs or pay for anything with a credit card.
The stock market would crash… and yet you probably wouldn’t even know it because you’d have no access to your stock portfolio.
Gas pumps are electronic, so they’d fail too. During Hurricane Charley down in Florida, for example, the power went out for about seven days. By day two, thieves were siphoning gas out of other people’s trucks and boats.
Even the basic necessities for human life would be almost impossible to come by. Without electricity, modern day farming would be impossible. Food production would dry up.
Electrical pumps power our water and sewage plants. So when the grid goes, so does your water. And so does your toilet.
Now, I know this sounds unfathomable at the moment. But the more I learn, the more certain I’ve become that we will see a major disruption in our electrical networks… and soon.
Remember, a small-scale attack on just nine substations out of 55,000 would knock out power to 300 million Americans for 18 months or more.
That’s according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s own analysis.
It’s a worst-case scenario… and yet when you look at the vulnerabilities of our electrical grid, it gets real scary, real quick.
Of those 55,000 substations, 90% have little security other than a chain-link fence. Many are situated miles away from civilization, where terrorists can expect little resistance. Taking out nine is child’s play. Yet it’s only one scenario that could shut down the grid for months at a time.
So it should come as no surprise that in December of 2014, Forbes called America’s power grid “the nation’s proverbial Achilles’ Heel.”
Trouble is, there’s not much the government can do… Our system has become so complex that a “quick fix” is simply not in the cards.
You see, the U.S. electric grid consists of more than…
- 400,000 miles of transmission lines
- 55,000 electrical substations
- 9,000 electric generating units
- And over 6,000 power plants.
The system truly is a modern marvel. But unfortunately, it’s turned into what you might call a “sitting duck.”
The industry has become a quagmire of government agencies, local municipalities, federal regulators and private operators. More than 3,200 independent utilities actually own and operate the network. Getting everyone to agree on sweeping changes and upgrades is next to impossible.
All of these issues have led to a neglected system that is poorly managed and on the verge of collapse.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg…
According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, “America relies on an aging electrical grid… some of which originated in the 1880s.” The report concluded that “Protecting the nation’s energy delivery systems… is vital to national security and economic well-being.”
Protecting from whom? The head of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security says, “There is an imminent threat from ISIS to the national electric grid.” Iran and North Korea are both actively pursuing ways to take down our grid, according to President Reagan’s former Science Advisor Dr. William Graham.
And NSA Director Michael Rogers recently testified that China and “one or two” other countries have the power to shut down the U.S. electric grid.
Former CIA Director Goes Public
In a recent letter to investors, billionaire hedge fund owner Paul Singer warned that the grid’s vulnerability is “the most significant danger” to the U.S. financial system.
He noted that the threat to America’s electrical grid is “head and shoulders above all the rest in terms of the scope of potential damage, adjusted for the likelihood of occurrence.”
“It is not a matter of if but when an attack takes down our grid,” said Singer.
And recently, former CIA Director Woolsey sat down with Forbes to raise awareness in the financial community. In the exclusive interview, he stated, “Right now our grid is totally vulnerable. Somebody’s got to be in charge, and there isn’t anyone stepping up at the moment. Americans work best when there is an initial flap about something that scares the hell out of everybody, like Pearl Harbor, and then we mobilize.
“The thing is… the first shot could conceivably destroy the country.”
America has a history of ignoring the warning signs until it’s too late. Just three days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, a confidential memo from the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence landed on President Roosevelt’s desk. It warned that the Japanese were preparing to attack Hawaii. In the case of 9/11, the FBI and CIA had detailed files on each of the hijackers and credible reports that they were attempting to use jetliners as active missiles.
And our inaction led to some of the greatest atrocities in U.S. history.
As an expert in finance and critical infrastructure, I believe we are now on the cusp of another American catastrophe. One that will cut off power to America for up to 18 months and cause more than $20 trillion in collateral damage.
There are four Major Outage Events that the Department of Energy believes could trigger a Black Sky Days crisis.
Major Outage Event #1: Physical Attacks
The first major threat is a physical attack like the one that occurred in California. Remember, it takes surprisingly little to cripple the U.S. electric grid. The FERC says a coordinated attack on just nine of our 55,000-plus substations would plunge the country into darkness for 18 months or longer.
How could only nine out of 55,000 do so much damage? It has to do with a critical substation component you probably know as a “transformer.”
As you may be aware, electricity generated by a power plant is too powerful for use in your home. Large transmission lines typically operate at 765 kilovolts (kV) or 500kV, while most homes and businesses operate on 120 volts (V) to 240V.
The electricity needs to be “transformed” to a lower voltage before local transmission lines can feed power to your home. This is what happens at these 55,000 substations.
When functional, the system works quite well. But when these transformers malfunction, the system breaks down and the power goes out.
This is exactly what happened in California. By concentrating their firepower on each unit’s oil tank, the gunmen successfully destroyed 17 high-voltage transformers and rendered the entire substation useless.
As you know, operators avoided a catastrophe by sending the site’s power to other substations. But had this been a coordinated attack on just nine substations, the entire power grid would have collapsed.
When a substation goes down, the power that typically routes through it suddenly redirects to a new substation. But when multiple stations go down simultaneously, the increased load is so severe that it shocks the system. And it doesn’t stop until the entire U.S. power grid has collapsed.
If we were hit by a coordinated attack on as few as nine substations, not only would it cause a nationwide blackout, but getting the system back up and running would actually require building and implementing new transformers… all while we wait in the dark.
Work would come to a grinding halt. Looting would start in the first few weeks. We’d see violent protests regarding food and water. Most people aren’t aware that our supermarkets keep just three days’ worth of food in stock. As with any emergency or disaster situation, supermarket shelves will be picked clean in a hurry.
It’ll get very ugly, very quickly.
Of course, I could be wrong. Our 55,000 substations could keep running just like normal… but that’s only one way the grid could go down. The second MOE I’ve uncovered is even more frightening because it is statistically guaranteed to happen at some point.
Major Outage Event #2: Severe Geomagnetic Storms
Unlike the first MOE, this threat doesn’t involve acts of terrorism or espionage. In fact, it doesn’t even come from Earth. I’m talking about “geomagnetic storms.”
Geomagnetic storms originate at the heart of our solar system, on the surface of the sun. And sometimes they result in bursts of plasma, like the one you see below.
The phenomenon is known as a “solar flare.”
Most of the time, these “flares” go hurling outward into space and don’t pose any real threat to Earth. But every once in a while, they come barreling into Earth’s atmosphere.
The collision creates what’s called an “electromagnetic pulse” effect, or EMP. In a nutshell… It sends out a shockwave for thousands of miles that destroys the circuitry on anything electronic.
Now, like I said, most of the time these solar flares don’t come anywhere close to Earth. But when they do, the results can be catastrophic…
On the morning of September 2, 1859, a major solar flare collided with Earth with the power of 10 billion atomic bombs, creating an EMP effect that blanketed vast regions of the planet. A few seconds later, telegraph systems worldwide went haywire. The EMP sent foreign electric currents spiraling through telegraph equipment ultimately frying the system from the inside out. Reports flooded in of sparks showering from telegraph machines, electrocuting operators and even causing fires inside telegraph stations.
And all over the planet, colorful auroras illuminated the night skies, glowing so brightly that birds began to chirp and people awoke to start their daily chores, thinking the sun was rising.
One eyewitness account from a woman in Sullivan’s Island off the coast of South Carolina was detailed in the Charleston Mercury: “The eastern sky appeared of a blood-red color. It extended almost to the zenith. The whole island was illuminated. The sea reflected the phenomenon, and no one could look at it without thinking of the passage in the Bible which says, ‘the sea was turned to blood.’”
Known as “The Carrington Event,” this was Earth’s first taste of the destruction a major geomagnetic storm can have on a technological society.
Today, the effects would be infinitely worse. A direct hit would first wipe out more than 900 satellites… creating a domino effect that would take down GPS and communications. Then it would overcook the entire electric grid, ultimately disabling everything from the stock market to your laptop and iPhone, right down to your refrigerator and even the electric ignition in your car.
According to a report from the National Academy of Sciences, the economic impact could exceed $2 trillion in the first year alone. Not only is this threat frighteningly real, but according to the Department of Energy’s official “Black Sky Days” report, it’s also very likely to occur.
In fact, NASA reported in 2014 that Earth had a near miss with a major solar flare on July 23, 2012. According to Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado, “If the eruption had occurred only one week earlier, Earth would have been in the line of fire. If it had hit, we would still be picking up the pieces,” he said.
But here’s what’s most concerning…
NASA scientists estimate that a massive solar flare collides with Earth every 150 years. Since the last big geomagnetic storm occurred in 1859… we’re due.
This all sounds like science fiction, I know. But the threat here is very real. And according to Joe McClelland, director of the Office of Energy Infrastructure for the FERC, “civilization is entirely unprepared for this eventuality.”
And if that weren’t bad enough, this third MOE is equally concerning…
Major Outage Event #3: Cyberwarfare
In today’s technological world, I’m sure you’re familiar with the emerging threat of cyberterrorism. (My colleague Sean Brodrick has written numerous Investment U articles on the subject.) There was the recent Sony attack where North Korea hijacked thousands of corporate emails. Then there’s the Target fiasco from a few years back when rogue hackers intercepted millions of credit card numbers.
Or maybe you’ve even been a victim of identity theft yourself… I know my email account has been hacked on more than one occasion.
But did you know that these cybercriminals can also hack their way into America’s electric grid?
You see, the entire grid is controlled by a series of software platforms and electronic devices… all of which are connected to the Internet.
The first evidence of this threat came back in March of 2007, in an obscure test conducted by the Department of Homeland Security… codenamed “Aurora.” The test was carried out at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), the nation’s leading energy research and development center.
To kick things off, the DHS installed a 2.5-megawatt generator and connected it to an electric substation, then set it running. It’s a setup that’s identical to most utility substations. Next, INL researchers hacked into industrial software that protects valuable grid equipment from dangerous power fluctuations. This allowed them to force the generator into what’s known as an “out of phase” condition.
Smoke began pouring from the generator almost immediately. The equipment literally started to tear itself apart in less than 60 seconds, as you can see in the video below. That’s how quickly these hackers can strike.
Now remember, this test was conducted in 2007. Nearly eight years later, not a single substation on the planet is capable of preventing one of these attacks. This is a serious problem. And it has the Intelligence Community quite concerned.
On November 20, 2014, NSA Director Michael Rogers issued a nationwide alert, warning that teams of international hackers were targeting U.S. infrastructure.
Then, just a few weeks later, on December 10, 2014, the nation’s top cyberdefense agency, known as the Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team (ICS-CERT), issued a warning of its own. The urgent notice warned that a sophisticated virus had “compromised numerous industrial control systems” that operate the nation’s power grid.
The ICS-CERT team knows that the virus originated in 2011. However, it has no clue how to assess the full extent of the damage. All it knows is that somebody – believed to be the Russians – has infiltrated our control systems. And they’ve been studying our inner workings for years. How the grid operates… where it connects… what our procedures are…
Simply put, these perpetrators – whoever they are – now have unabridged access to America’s critical infrastructure.
To recap, America’s power grid is under the threat of attack from on-the-ground terrorists, Russian and Chinese cyberattackers, and even the sun…
And yet, there’s still one final MOE that could singlehandedly destroy America’s electric grid… and render it completely useless for 18 months or more.
Major Outage Event #4: Manmade EMP Device
This threat was first realized on July 9, 1962. That’s when the U.S. military detonated a 1.4-megaton warhead high above a remote island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The idea was to understand what the fallout would look like if the Soviets launched a surprise attack and detonated a nuclear bomb in space.
Known as “Starfish Prime,” the operation turned out to be the first and last of its kind… When the missile detonated, it produced an unexpected and extremely powerful electromagnetic pulse that blasted outward for hundreds of miles.
The explosion first destroyed dozens of nearby satellites. Then, seconds later, and some 900 miles to the east, Hawaii’s power grid erupted into cascading failure. Hundreds of streetlamps exploded… Telephone systems shut down… It forced a statewide radio blackout…
The blast even damaged commercial airliners, creating panic in the skies as pilots scrambled to stabilize their systems.
It exposed a catastrophic weakness in our national security… That a nuclear device, detonated in the upper reaches of our atmosphere, has the power to emit a very strong EMP burst capable of destroying the entire U.S. electric grid.
That was more than 50 years ago… and the science behind EMP technology has grown tenfold since then. Today, it remains one of the most concerning threats in the U.S. military.
Iran, North Korea, Russia… they all have the capability and motivation to launch such an attack. Even ISIS could pull it off. Despite its barbaric tactics, it’s the most well-funded terrorist organization in history, earning millions of dollars per day through criminal activities like robbery, extortion and the illicit sale of oil from reserves captured in Iraq and Syria.
And it could easily spare a few million to pick up an older warhead on the black market. (It may have already done so.) While we do have missile defense systems in place to prevent some airborne assaults, these systems were implemented during the Reagan administration, specifically to fend off the Soviet threat from the north. So the early-warning radars and ground-based missile interceptors are all facing the northern skies.
That’s why, in April 2015, U.S. Ambassador Henry Cooper issued an urgent warning in The Wall Street Journal, “The U.S. is unprepared to cope with nuclear EMP strikes from North Korea and Iran if their missiles’ trajectory takes a southern route.”
What’s even more concerning is that one of these missiles could easily be hidden inside a satellite, orbited over U.S. soil, and detonated at will. In fact, it may already be up there… a moment’s notice from being dropped.
In the same Wall Street Journal article, Task Force on National and Homeland Security Executive Director Dr. Pry said, “Iran and North Korea have successfully orbited satellites on south-polar trajectories that appear to practice evading U.S. missile defenses, and at optimum altitudes to make a surprise EMP attack.”
So what is the “optimum altitude” for maximum EMP destruction? It’s simple: the higher the detonation, the bigger the blast radius. If detonated 30 miles in the air, an EMP would knock out power to an area the size of Texas. At a height of 120 miles, it would affect the majority of the United States. And at 300 miles high, an EMP would knock out power to all of North America.
That’s why, back in 2013, when North Korea was test-firing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICMBs) – missiles that enter Earth’s orbit to travel long distances – the U.S. was concerned that it was disguising a “test” with a real EMP attack.
Had it turned out to be an EMP, U.S. defense systems would have been crippled in a flash. Literally. Our strategic communications, computer networks, GPS, satellite systems, everything… zapped out in a nanosecond.
But here’s what concerns me the most…
An enemy does NOT need an arsenal of weapons to launch this attack. In fact, former Vice President Dick Cheney says North Korea could pull it off pretty easily. “Everybody thinks, North Korea, to be a threat to the United States, needs lots of missiles able to fly thousands of miles very accurately. They don’t have to do that at all. All they’ve got to do is detonate one weapon a couple hundred miles over the Earth.”
And don’t sleep on Iran’s capability either. The director of the United States Nuclear Strategy Forum says, “An EMP attack can be delivered by a short-range missile launched from a ship, such as a commercial freighter, operating near U.S. shores. Iran has practiced such a delivery mode.”
According to former CIA Director Woolsey, “It’s not just state actors we should be worried about. Terrorist groups, if they can get their hands on some fissile material, and they wouldn’t need a lot, could set off an EMP blast by attaching a small nuclear device to a simple weather balloon and detonating it once it gets 20 miles or so above the ground… It really isn’t that difficult to do this.”
That’s three specific delivery modes our enemies can choose from…
- A rudimentary missile
- A standard satellite
- Or even a basic weather balloon.
And we’d be zapped back to the Dark Ages in a matter of seconds. No phones. No money. No heat. No running water. No medicine. No police. Just darkness.
We would never even know who hit us, because we would have no means to investigate. It’s a sobering thought. But my hope is that by now you realize the threat to America’s power grid is real.

The truth is, when the Black Sky Days crisis hits, it’s going to be every man for himself out there. So first thing’s first, you’ll need an adequate supply of food and water to survive this crisis.
As for water, I recommend that you invest in an inexpensive plastic drum that can store enough water to provide 1 gallon of water per person per day. You’ll want a big enough tank for at least a three-day supply, but a week’s supply is even better.
You can find cheap plastic tanks like this one online or at a local farm equipment retailer. Simply fill it up with water, store it somewhere safe, and be sure to drain and refill it at least twice a year.
You’ll also want a personal pocket water purifier. You’ll be able to refill your water tank with this and make sure it’s clean.
Regarding food, I recommend a month’s worth of nonperishable goods. Stock up on canned foods, nuts and other items with high protein content. Then toss everything into a sealed plastic bin and store it near your backup supply of water.
Okay, with that said, there are three additional items that could help keep you and your family safe during this crisis…
Remember, the Intelligence Community says the Black Sky Days crisis is both “imminent” and “inevitable.” And according to my research, I believe it’s possible it could occur sometime in the next 12 months. That’s why it’s so important for you to start preparing immediately.
And the best way to begin doing that is by getting your hands on this first item…
For one, you can use it to send an emergency distress signal. In fact, this item could even be used to communicate over distances of up to 30 miles. You can also use it to start a fire. Then there’s the third item. This device allows you to restore power to certain electronics without having to plug anything in. And no, it has nothing to do with solar power. But rest assured, this little gadget can easily repower something as simple as a pair of walkie-talkies… to more critical equipment like power tools and personal medical devices. Better yet, it never runs out of juice. You can use this device over and over again. Like the others, you can snag this one for less than $20.
Also, there’s one more thing I want to mention. This is highly important…
It’s imperative that you pick up an EMP-proof cover bag to store these items in. These bags are also inexpensive and easy to purchase. Simply toss all three devices in an EMP-proof bag, then stash it somewhere easy for you to get to… like your closet, basement or garage. In the end, these devices could not only save your life, but also could collectively cost you less than what you pay for a tank of gas.

If America’s power grid goes down for a month or more, the use of credit cards, ATMs and banking as we know it will instantly cease to exist. That’s going to be a problem, and here’s why…
According to The Wall Street Journal, while the net worth of all Americans is $80.7 trillion, the actual amount of physical dollars worldwide totals just $1.2 trillion. That’s about $3,636 per person in physical cash. So even if cash is still widely used in America, other forms of currency will be vital to exchanging goods in a powerless society.
And when this happens, the value of one particular asset is set to skyrocket. That’s why I call it “disaster insurance.” As you may have guessed, I’m talking about gold.
Now, I’m sure you understand that gold is employed as a hedge against fluctuations in currencies, particularly the U.S. dollar. As a rule of thumb, if the dollar appreciates, gold prices fall. The inverse holds true as well. When the dollar loses value, gold prices spike.

Now, I’ve put a lot of doomsday scenarios out there today. But to tell you the truth, I’m actually hopeful that we can avoid a catastrophe.
There are ways to harden the grid and protect it from each MOE. It’s possible. But it’s going to take an enormous wave of investments to do so.
And that’s exactly what I’m seeing right now. Believe it or not, the government recognizes the dire nature of this situation. And right now, it’s doing what government does best… throwing massive amounts of money at the problem.
According to the official ASCE report card, it will take a total of $3.6 trillion in investments by 2020 to fix our critical infrastructure. The government is handing out major contracts to individual businesses that stand to make a lot of money solving this problem.
For example, one company I’m looking at just received a $700 million contract to help the U.S. military harden its facilities against any attack. It’s developed a patented new electrical technology that allows end users to literally flip a switch, disconnect from the grid and operate on a completely self-contained system. Its technology essentially acts as a firewall to guarantee zero power loss during a blackout.
According to former CIA Director Woolsey, of the 149 military bases located in the United States, only one is capable of fully disconnecting from the grid. So if there were a nationwide blackout, 148 of 149 U.S. military bases would be inoperable.
That’s where this particular company comes in. Its newly demonstrated system was designed specifically to protect military bases. And with 148 U.S. bases in need of an overhaul, the company is set to receive dozens of very profitable contracts. I think this company’s share price could easily double in the next 12 months.

Now, you may be wondering… why should I invest if civilization could come crashing down?

See, most people think he won the Nobel Prize in physics for his theory of relativity. But that’s not true. He won the Nobel Prize for figuring out something called the “photoelectric effect.” It forever changed the way we see the universe and helped make solar power possible.
Today, the solar industry is exploding. Just look at the trajectory over the last 15 years…
The number of solar installations jumped 30% in 2014 alone. And they’ve nearly tripled since 2011. It’s becoming more affordable by the day. And prices are falling all over the world.
Between 1975 and 2015, the price has fallen from $101.05 per watt to just $0.61 per watt. And I believe one particular company will see substantial stock gains as a result.
First of all, it’s one of the largest solar panel makers in the world. But that’s not all it does. It also builds entire solar power plants.
In fact, since 2009, the company has built 520 megawatts of utility-scale solar projects. These plants are not just here in the U.S., but also all over the world… in Japan, Germany, Spain, Peru and Bulgaria.
But here’s where I see major potential for this company…
It also specializes in making off-grid solar systems. These are designed to power entire communities or just a single home. Basically, it provides a cost-effective source of electricity to smaller communities without access to the grid… OR to those who simply wish to disconnect from the grid. Either way, if the grid goes down, the homes with this system remain unaffected. These residents’ lights stay on. Their showers still work. And their food won’t spoil.
Fundamentally, the company is a rock star. Earnings have soared 552% in the past year, and I expect another 43.5% jump by the end of 2015. And according to its 2015 first quarter report, revenues were up 84.6% year over year, which blew away consensus estimates.

As the name suggests, a micro-grid is essentially a smaller grid that can work independently of the U.S. power grid. It’s essentially a self-contained system that delivers dependable power to the end user. Once installed, you’ll no longer have to pay the prices determined by your utility company. You’ll be able to generate, store and use your own electricity. And in the event you have excess power stored up, you can even sell that power to your local utility company.
Better yet, micro-grids are far more reliable than the main grid. And many of them are hardened against all four of the MOEs I showed you earlier. But like I said, this step requires a bit more dedication on your end. Frankly, it really comes down to whether or not you want to have a reliable source of electricity in the event of a grid collapse.
Now I’ve already taken this step myself. So if the grid does go down, my family will remain safe. We’ll still have power, our lights will stay on, our food won’t spoil and I’ll be able to regulate the temperature in our home.
